The Novello Theatre opened on 22nd May 1905 as a twin to the Aldwych Theatre and both the edifices were designed by W.G.R. Sprague. Sprague’s love for stage could be attributed to his mother Dolores Drummond who was a notable actress of her time. It was a time when craze for theatres was at its peak in London and in his career that spanned beyond 40 years, he designed 33 of them. Novella Theatre’s was results of a redevelopment work that was taking place in the area. The venue was named the Waldorf Theatre. Sprague had designed an outstanding facade made of Portland Stone for the venue that was a classic example of Louis XIV style interior.

The venue was richly decorated with marble and gilt stones. Cream and rose du Barry were the shades that dominated the venue fleur de péche marble pilasters were incorporated in the dress and the upper circle. This was the last three-tier theater that was built in the British capital and the first one in which a raked stage was absent. The decorative panels and friezes that surrounded the venue exhibits Sprague’s attention to details. Shubert brothers who were the first lessees to the venue had over 20 theatres in America under their management and this was their maiden venture in Europe. It opened with 8-week season of opera and drama that features opera singers Emma Calve and Edouard de Reszke and starred Eleanora Duse. The first show to enjoy long run here is the Anglo-Chinese play Mr Wu. It starred the matinee idol Mathesan Lang, such was the popularity of this play that he soon went on to become a household name. Years later, paying a tribute to the show that offered him spectacular success, he named his memoir as Mr Wu Looks Back. Wu later on took up the management of the venue and made a return here Wu Li Chang and as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice

During the First World War, the management of the house was taken over by Julia Neilson and Fred Terry, the younger brother of the notable theatre actress Ellen Terry. Some of the shows that have enjoyed long run at the venue include the black comedy Arsenic and Old laces, Sailor Beware and Stephen Sondheim’s musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

A Grade II listed theatre venue, it can accommodate 1,105 audiences at a time. After undergoing numerous name changes, the venue was given its current name after multi-talented Ivor Novello Theatre London who resided in one of the flats above the venue between 1913 and 1951. The currently running show at the venue is the musical Mamma Mia. The award winning show is based on Catherine Johnson’s story and has been directed by Phyllida Lloyd. It takes audiences for a tour one of the breathtaking islands in Greece. Mamma Mia is a musical comedy that features the story of a mother and a daughter. The piece features some of the greatest songs of the first non-English band of the world ABBA.
